What is print on demand?
Simply put, print on demand are websites that offer product for you to upload your design and have it readily available for your customers to order as soon as it's available to them for purchase.
Different types of POD
When I first started exploring POD, I discovered there were 2 types.
1) Spoonflower, Redbubble, Society6, etc. where you upload into their overall store, use keywords to optimize your listings and they still create + ship out your products for you (without your branding on there).
2) Printify, Gooten to name a few where you are able to brand your shipment with your branding information. For example, they are still producing + shipping your item for you and allowing you to put your business information on the shipping label as if it really came from you.
Please note: Every POD site listed above has specific areas they allow businesses to include their brands and may be at an additional cost but the great thing about these, is that they allow you to add your branding which if you are working on building your brand, this allows for brand recognition)
Pricing: A key thing to keep in mind with this is for POD through Spoonflower, Society6, Redbubble, etc. you are limited to adjusting pricing on each product (with respect to Society6 where you can tweak some but not all).
With Printify, Gooten, etc. you are able to increase the item cost in your shop.
For ex:
* Printify mug costs $5
* You charge: $15 in your store
* Profit: $10
You do want to keep in mind shipping costs and either choose to include it in your product or manage to make sure shipping is covered somehow.
Ultimately, there is no "right" or "wrong" way to go about how you want to add products to your current business or soon-to-be business. It's a great way to test out new product without adding overhead costs and also gives you location freedom (for my friends who don't want to ship their own packages).
